"Long after many started saying 'I only like her old stuff,' the Queen of Pop dropped this start-to-finish perfect album of disco-inspired club cuts, each track mixed - a rarity for non-compilations. While a pop star's club throne is never guaranteed forever, Madonna has more claims to the top spot than most and Confessions proves why. This is the album all her subsequent albums is compared to; for its enduring relevance and how it redefined Madonna as an artist, it should be." - Vice, 'The 99 Greatest Dance Albums of All Time' (ranked #3)

"Confessions on a Dance Floor" was released in November 2005, and I was in my mid-to-late teens: the perfect age for an album to arrive and change my life. I had been a casual fan of hers since I was young, but this was the era that truly blew me away and cemented my love and appreciation for her work for life. This album, and its tour's home video release, went on to win two Grammy Awards and sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The album's much-celebrated non-stop album mix is currently unavailable on modern streaming and digital music platforms, which forces a very different listening experience to what was intended when it was released. While listening to this edited version and wondering why it was the only one available, I started brainstorming what a deluxe physical release of this album could look like.

The project was a great opportunity for me to learn more 3D skills in developing how this set would be laid out, as opposed to earlier projects' use of Photoshop mockups (later redesigned in 3D). The final result sticks closely to the original album's art direction combined with Steven Klein's equestrian-themed spread for W Magazine in 2006 that was later used to open the tour. Because there is so much music and video content available, this set is a massive 15 discs across CD, Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray, with an additional four 12" vinyl records, six lithographic posters, a hardcover book, and a USB containing high-resolution audio and video copies of all media.

This project is indebted to Giovanni Bianco, Steven Klein, Stuart Price, and Madonna, as well as inspired by super deluxe editions released by The Beatles, Daft Punk and David Bowie (thank you SuperDeluxeEdition.com).

Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" album's original pressings in CD, vinyl LP and promotional items

"Confessions" is a visual challenge. So much of the design of this album and its marketing was built on maximalist, heavy use of graphics as well as highly-edited photography. The design overall stayed consistent with its logo, but began deviating as time and single releases went on, until finally the CD/DVD release of "The Confessions Tour" omitted much of the disco lights in favour of minimalism and limited colours. Subsequently there was a huge variety of styles, colours and design approaches to work with in preparing this collection, and it was a fantastic challenge trying to create a cohesiveness to this body of work.

Drafts and work in progress images of my 3D assets created for Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" box set

The project was built in 3D software and I documented my progress creating the individual assets. The most important was getting the disco ball packaging for the CDs correct. I also experimented with lighting and different artworks for the CDs as the project developed.

The box design used original assets from the 2005 album artwork.

Inside the box is a gold disco ball which holds the CDs and USB drive, six lithographic art prints featuring photography by Steven Klein, and two vinyl copies of "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and "The Confessions Tour" highlights, the latter pressed on vinyl for the first time here.

The gold disco ball was inspired by the Steven Klein photography of a similar prop on the album artwork. I included a custom M icon on the silver tip of the ball. When opened, the disco ball reveals a compartment containing 15 discs in individual glossy card sleeves - a combination of CD, Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray - and a USB drive in the shape of a smaller silver disco ball. I wanted to create something unique for "Confessions on a Dance Floor"'s deluxe presentation with this disco ball packaging.

The 15 discs included in this set are extensive and thorough. I went for a real kitchen sink approach, which definitely starts to stack up in a more modern album like this one. You not only have the album itself, demos that fans know about and have leaked online, but there are also live performances, a tour, promotional tour appearances (including Coachella and Live Earth), music videos and interviews, and a huge amount of remixes for the singles and some of the album tracks. I imagine a more realistic release would trim this all back, but it was fun working on something this extensive (and doing a lot of number crunching to make sure my tracklists would fit on standard CDs). The designs re-use the disco light graphics across the original album artwork.

Tucked into the bottom of the disco ball package is a small, silver disco ball-shaped USB drive that would contain all of the media included on the CDs, Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray in lossless/high quality formats. This mixed-media approach was inspired by box sets by Daft Punk.

Included with the box are two vinyl albums. "Confessions on a Dance Floor" would be included on pink glitter vinyl as the standard album edition, and "The Confessions Tour" highlights CD would be pressed on vinyl for the first time ever in a matching purple glitter edition. I have been advised that some glitter vinyls have had sound quality issues in the past, so extensive testing would need to be undertaken.

A hardcover book would also be included, featuring behind the scenes facts and stories about the making of the album and its tour.

The final assortment of media in this box set is extensive: 13 CDs, Blu-Ray, 4K Blu-Ray, USB drive, two vinyl albums, a hardcover book and six lithographic photo prints. "Confessions on a Dance Floor" is a landmark album in pop and dance music, regarded as one of the best of Madonna's legendary career, and this was a fun project to work on as a tribute to such a great collection of music.
